How can you tell That Im an Alcoholic?

I love beer or alcohol. I tried not to drink but I feel lonely. Drinking makes me happy. I drink at least 3 bottle of 500 ml of strong beer. Do you think I have a drinking problem? Actually most of the time I drink alone. Is this a sign that I am an alcoholic?

Look, Vernon, our society is really hung up on the label “alcoholic.” It is usually defined as a person who cannot control their desire to drink and can’t stop doing it. “Alcoholism”, like all the other “ism’s”, is a construct created by those who are so correct that they feel entitled to impose their ideas on other people. However, that doesn’t mean that continuing to drink as much as you do won’t cause you harm.

The problem with either being labeled “alcoholic” or believing it yourself is that it doesn’t explore or address underlying problems. You’ve already identified a couple of things that are bothering you. You’re lonely and unhappy. I have been there myself. Those are problems which you can address and take care of.

A few visits to a good shrink could help you a lot. A “good” psychiatrist or psychologist is, in your case, one who isn’t going to just be preachy and condemn your use of alcohol. If your shrink is any good at all, he or she will help you to see your good qualities and explore what you can do to better interact with others. Loneliness is terrible, but mostly self imposed. If you are a kind, decent, honest and caring person, there are lots of people out there who would like to be friends with you. If you don’t have those qualities now, you can acquire them.

Vernon, no answer can bring you happiness. I’ve pondered the sources of happiness for many years. Right now, I believe that if you are kind to others, treat them with respect and compassion and do productive work, you will find happiness. Sometimes it finds you.

Best of luck in your pursuits. You are a worthy person.
